Inquiry Projects

Inquiry projects are a really effective way to get students involved with the curriculum, because they essentially choose what they study.
First you have students write down Questions of Self--any questions they have about their future that have to do with themselves. Then they do the same thing except they write down Question of World--any questions they have about the world around them. Then you have the students get into small groups and discuss their questions, and find similarities among them. This is a neat process to observe and participate in. Bring the whole class back together after they have had plenty of time, and write down on a chart paper some common questions that were discovered. When you have several questions, try, as a class, to come up with some common themes throughout all the questions. With those themes, you will have inquiry groups. Their job is to research those themes. For our class, the themes were: Outside influences, Overstepping Boundaries, Resources, and Controversial Issues.
