  • Journal: English Education, Reading "Jack". February 1998.  This article talks about different case studies done with students involved with controversial issues.  The main focus is on a student named "Jack" who had to deal with his father's homosexuality.

 

  • Journal: ALAN-Review: The Censorship Connection: Shhhh! Winter 1997  This article contains the author's reflections on having been, in effect, censored, that is, told that her talk at a middle school had been cancelled because of controversial struggles at the school about other books.

 

  • Journal: Journal of Research in Science-Teaching, A Study of the Presence of Evolutionary Protoconcepts in Pre-High School Textbooks. May 1994  Elementary and junior high school science textbooks were analyzed for the presence of prerequisite topics on evolution.  Recommendations for teacher analysis of textbooks are provided.

 

  • Journal: Educational Leadership: Addressing Sexual Harassment in the Classroom November 1993.  Describes a social studies teacher's efforts to help junior high students deal with problems of sexual harassment in the classroom.  

 

  • Journal: Harvard Educational Review: You Can't Just Say that the Only Ones Who Can Speak are Those Who Agree with Your Position. Winter 1993  A study of classroom dynamics when discussing controversial issues--shows that emotionally charged issues can be constructive.
