*What is a controversial issue?*
Any issue that tends to create polarized viewpoints may be considered controversial.
*Why should teachers become involved in teaching controversial issues?*
Teaching about these issues can have positive effects on students, school climate, and society at large. Students become motivated when they are discussing topics that are of importance to them.
